In May of 2021, a 24-year-old man drowned at the Ward 7 beach, which is located near a dropoff to the Detroit River shipping channel. Including that young man, the channel’s strong currents have reportedly claimed six lives since the beach opened in 1980.

The westerly section of the beach near the dangerous dropoff is fenced off and has signs indicating that swimming in that area is prohibited.

Following the man’s death three years ago, the City of Windsor sped up a long-planned move of the beach to a safety spot farther to the east. City council at the time unanimously agreed to immediately proceed with a $227,000 environmental assessment — initially slated for 2024 and required before any work could be done.

Concept designs for a proposed reimagining of Sand Point Beach were unveiled in the spring of 2022. Based on those designs, the sand and swimming area will move one lot over to Ganatchio Park, grassy land occupied by picnic tables and a break wall. A new playground, splash pad, covered pavilion, and greenspace are expected to replace the beach and its existing play equipment.
