The Regina Red Sox wrapped up an Alberta road trip while the Regina Pats signed a trio of prospects

Regina Red Sox

The Regina Red Sox wrapped up their Western Canadian Baseball League Alberta road trip with a 2-2 record after splitting games against the Edmonton Prospects and Fort McMurray Giants.

The Red Sox picked up a convincing 14-2 win in Edmonton on Thursday before beating Fort McMurray 15-9 on Friday.

However, Regina then lost 9-6 to the Giants in the rematch on Saturday before falling to the Prospects 7-6 on Sunday.

The Red Sox — who sit in second place in the East Division with a 7-5 record — will be back at home Tuesday when they host the Swift Current 57s at Currie Field (7 p.m.), before the club plays road games Wednesday and Thursday in Weyburn and Moose Jaw respectively. Regina will be back home Friday against the first place Medicine Hat Mavericks.

Regina Pats

The Regina Pats have signed three players from their 2024 WHL Draft class.

Forwards Sam Failler, Mathis Paull and Cohen Handy have all signed WHL scholarship and development agreements with the club after being selected by Regina in May’s prospects draft.

Failler, a Dundurn, Sask. native, was the 38th overall pick by the Pats after putting up 48 points in 19 games with the Martensville Marauders U15 AA squad last season.

Paull, a 15-year-old from Vernon, B.C., was selected 10 picks later at 48th overall after putting up 34 points in 27 games with the Rink H.A. Kelowna U15 prep team.

Meanwhile, Handby, a 6-foot-3, 172-pound Kelowna product, was Regina’s 52nd pick in the draft after scoring 32 points in 27 games with the Okanagan Hockey Academy U15 prep team last season.

WHL schedule

The WHL also announced season and home opening dates for each club ahead of the 2024-25 regular season.

The Pats will open the year on the road as they visit the Prince Albert Raiders on Sept. 20 before Regina hosts the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sept. 21 at the Brandt Centre.

The defending WHL champion Moose Jaw Warriors will also begin the season on the road as they visit Brandon on Sept. 20 before hosting Prince Albert the following night.

Meanwhile, the Swift Current Broncos, who return to the East Division next season, will open the season with a home-and-home series against the Saskatoon Blades.

The full pre-season and regular season schedule will be announced the week of June 24.

Paris Olympics

Regina’s Kenzie Priddell will represent Team Canada at the Summer Olympics this year in Paris, as she has been named to Canada’s artistic swimming team for the Games.

Priddell also represented Canada at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo as an alternate. This year, she has been named a co-captain.

Saskatoon’s Sydney Carroll is also on Canada’s artistic swimming team as she has been named this year’s traveling alternate.

Local rugby

In local senior men’s rugby action, the Regina Rogues topped the Regina Condors 55-12 on Friday night while the Regina Highlanders narrowly beat the Campion Grads 27-26.

Kiwanis Club scholarships

Every year the Regina Kiwanis Club awards scholarships to deserving high school athletes.

The 2024 winners are Jose Valley of Winston Knoll (Female basketball – George and Margaret Yeo); Bret Rieder of LeBoldus (Male basketball – George and Margaret Yeo); Kaden Scott Whiteside of Sheldon-Williams (George Bothwell); Thomas King of Regina Christian (Norman Church); Brady Vindevoghel of Miller (Ben Gofine); and Liam Tighe of Sheldon-Williams (Jack Huber).

Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame

Moose Jaw’s Ken Kelly, a Paralympic silver medalist, has been announced as one of 14 inductees into the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame as the Class of 2024.

Kelly, along with his mixed crewboat featuring Kirk Westergaard, John McRoberts and Davis Cook, won a silver medal at the 1996 Paralympic Games. Kelly also competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics, where he and his team finished in 11th place.

The induction ceremony is set for Oct. 25 in Vancouver.
