Panasonic’s AI-enabled Toughbook with Intel Ultra processor starts at $4,700

In a nutshell: Panasonic has launched a new version of its rugged Toughbook laptop packing the latest in CPU, GPU, and NPU technology. The second-generation Toughbook 40, dubbed the Mk2, is the first Toughbook equipped with Intel Core Ultra processors (up to an Ultra 7 vPro). Machines can be configured with up to 64 GB of DDR5 memory and up to 4 TB of SSD storage. You’ve got choices when it comes to graphics, too: Intel Arc graphics and AMD Radeon Pro W6300M are both optional upgrades.

Panasonic notes that Intel Ultra processors deliver up to 143 percent faster AI application performance and 73 percent faster generative AI performance compared to previous-gen chips.

The new Toughbook additionally features a 14-inch glove touch-enabled display, 4G or 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, 95db front speakers, a 5-megapixel front-facing infrared webcam with privacy cover, and up to 24 hours of battery life (with the optional second battery).

Panasonic’s latest supports up to four expansion bays that accept accessories called xPAK modules. These peripherals enable all sorts of different functionality. For example, an updated barcode xPAK enables scanning of badges and access cards, while another new module adds additional ports including USB-C, USB-A, and HDMI.

xPAK modules can be optioned when ordering a new machine or purchased later and installed by the end user.

Panasonic’s target market is law enforcement departments, federal agencies, and utility companies but really, anyone with a need for a rugged laptop could be an ideal customer. Speaking of its rugged nature, the new Toughbook 40 is MIL-STD-810H, MIL-STD-461H, and C1D2 certified, carries an IP66 rating, and can survive drops up to six feet.

The base configuration measures 11.9 inches (L) x 13.9 inches (W) x 2.1 inches (H) and weighs 7.4 pounds.

The new Toughbook 40 Mk2 is available now starting at $4,699, and all systems come backed by a three year warranty. There is also a Toughbook as a Service subscription program should you prefer to rent instead of own.
