Saskatoon police dog aids in arrest after brief chase

An attempted traffic stop by Saskatoon police led to the use of a tire deflation device and the K9 unit in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 2 a.m., officers spotted a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot in the 3000 block of Fairlight Drive. They believed the male driver had a weapon, police said in a media release.

“Police successfully deployed a tire deflation device. However, the vehicle continued driving erratically south on Highway 219,” the release stated.

Police located the vehicle in a ditch after the suspect fled on foot. A police dog tracked him to a bush and he was arrested without further incident.

Officers searched the vehicle and found 25g of cocaine, 18g of methamphetamine, 12g of cannabis, a prohibited weapon, ammunition and other drug paraphernalia.

The 33-year-old man is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, dangerous driving, evading police, drug related charges and a breach of several court orders.
