“The accused in this matter hid in his girlfriend’s vehicle without her knowledge and when she returned to the vehicle, he proceeded to assault her by choking,” Sgt. Joanne Bortoluss said in a statement released Wednesday. “The victim was able to break free and call for help.”

She said the accused fled the area, but not before removing the ankle monitor he had been wearing to track his movements.

“Members of the Offender Management Unit were able to locate the accused in the Barrie area and took him into custody without incident,” Bortoluss said.

The Oshawa man, whose name has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim, is charged with assault (spousal), choking, failure to comply with a release order, mischief and possession contrary to a prohibition order.
