Sports briefs: Sask. Sports Hall of Fame announces 2024 inductees

On April 9, the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame announced seven new inductees for the 2024 class, including three in the athlete category and two each in the builder and team categories.

Created in Saskatoon in 2016, the Sherry Anderson senior women’s curling rink, featuring Anderson, Patty Hersikorn, Brenda Goertzen and Anita Silvernagle, is being inducted as one of the teams.

The foursome won six consecutive provincial championships, five consecutive national championships and three World Senior Curling Championships, each of which is a record.

Also being inducted into the team category is the 2003-04 University of Saskatchewan men’s volleyball team, who won a Canada West title that season as well as defeating the Alberta Golden Bears in five sets to claim the school’s fourth U SPORTS title.

North Battleford’s Wayne Hellquist is being inducted in the builder category for his work in volleyball.

Hellquist spent many years on the provincial and national volleyball Board of Directors in addition to 14 years on the Canadian Olympic Committee board, which included one as president, making him the first person from Saskatchewan to hold the role. He also led the creation of the para-sport volleyball program.

A 36-year career as a chuckwagon driver has earned Loon Lake’s Ray Mitsuing an induction in the athlete category.

In each of those years, Mitsuing qualified for the Calgary Stampede and was a seven-time champion of the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association.

The other three inductees include Regina’s Chelsea Stone (taekwondo) and Fir Mountain’s Carl Olson (rodeo) for the athlete category, as well as Melville’s Karen Howard (figure skating) in the builder category.

The induction ceremony will take place Sept. 28 in Regina.

Flin Flon Bombers advance to SJHL final

Five different players scored for the Flin Flon Bombers on April 9 to lead their team to a 5-1 victory over the Battlefords North Stars, sealing their best-of-seven Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League semifinal series in four straight games.

Earlier in the series, the Bombers posted victories of 4-3, 6-2 and 5-2.

Flin Flon now advances to the SJHL final, but their opponent will depend on the other semifinal series between the Melfort Mustangs and Humboldt Broncos.

In that series, Humboldt forced a Game 6 after winning 4-2 in Game 5 on Saturday night.

Melfort held the early 2-0 lead in the series after back-to-back victories of 4-2 and 4-3, but Humboldt earned their first win in triple overtime 3-2 on April 9.

The Mustangs then posted their own 4-3 overtime victory in Game 4 on Wednesday. Game 6 of the series was scheduled for Sunday night in Humboldt.
