You know you’ve hit the big time when Kelly Clarkson covers your song.

The pop icon covered Benson Boone’s smash hit “Beautiful Things” during the “Kellyoke” portion of her talk show June 11, in a performance that blew away fans.

Like Boone’s banger, Clarkson keeps it soft for the first minute or so before getting set to rock out and picks up the pace around the 1:20 mark as she reaches the chorus. The Grammy winner then shows off her pipes, and around the 1:40 mark, hits notes that we mere mortals can only dare to dream about before she slows it down as the song draws to a close.

Fans watching on YouTube were in complete awe listening to Clarkson’s take on the song:

  • “1:40 That note is spectacular holy biscuits”
  • “1:42 That note was extra special. You don’t hear that very often”
  • “After this, we all need a official cover of this song right NOW”
  • “Now we need a Kelly and Benson duet”
  • “OMGG her high notes are so effortless”
  • “Kelly blows my mind! Sometimes I think she is superhuman!”

Boone and Clarkson are somewhat cut from the same cloth. While Clarkson emerged as “American Idol’s” inaugural champion in 2002, Boone appeared on the show as an 18-year-old in its 19th season in 2021 before deciding to pull out — even after judge Katy Perry told him in his audition that he could win the show.

“The reason that I quit ‘American Idol’ is because I wanted to do music,” he said on the “Zach Sang Show” in 2022. “I decided that I wanted to do music, and I don’t want people to be like, ‘Oh, Benson Boone. “American Idol” blew him up. That’s what he comes from.’ No. I want to be Benson Boone because I write smash hits, and they love my music. That’s why I quit.”

Boone’s decision to leave the show didn’t preclude him from launching a career that is on a meteoric rise. “Beautiful Things” has become one of the year’s biggest hits, spending seven weeks atop the Billboard Global 200 and peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Boone, who is currently on his “Fireworks & Rollerblades” world tour, will also partner with another well-known artist when he opens for Taylor Swift at her London concert June 23.
