An officer was accidentally shot by a fellow officer while they were executing a search warrant, police announced in a news release Friday.

The officer’s injuries were not life threatening and they were taken to the hospital, the news release said, adding that no members of the public were injured in the incident.

Members of the Regina Police Service’s (RPS) Street Gang Unit and the Tactical Support Unit were executing the warrant at a home on the 1100 block of Retallack Street at around 12:15 a.m. on Friday, according to police.

During this search warrant execution there was an accidental discharge of a police officer’s firearm, which struck another police officer,” the release noted.

The RPS Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident, with the civilian-led Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) providing oversight.
